Formula Student
Formula Student is a student engineering competition run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Teams from around the world design, build and race single-seater, formula-style cars, but it isn't simply the fastest car that wins. A panel of automotive and motorsport experts judge the cars on a range of criteria. The winning team must demonstrate the best overall package in terms of design, race performance, manufacturing costs and appearance.
The idea behind Formula Student is to enhance academic studies and support progressive learning with in-depth, hands-on experience of design and manufacturing, as well as of the economic aspects of automotive engineering. Students are expected to approach the competition as though a manufacturing company had tasked them with the creation of a prototype for evaluation.
The challenge for the teams is to design and build a prototype that demonstrates superior performance in relation to acceleration, braking power and handling. The target market is the amateur, weekend racer so the cars should also be inexpensive, reliable and easy to operate. Other considerations include appearance, comfort and the use of standard parts.
As part of our commitment to helping prepare engineering students for their professional careers, 3Dconnexion is a proud sponsor the Formula Student competition and provides ongoing support by supplying teams around the globe with 3Dconnexion 3D mice.
